Alphabet says Google Cloud revenue doubled; its AI usage numbers still need independent context
Google reported 103% cloud revenue growth, one billion Gemini app users and nearly 32 billion first-party model tokens a minute. These are consequential scale claims, but they mix people, activity and revenue rather than measuring benefit.
The short version
- What happened
- Alphabet's CEO said Google Cloud revenue grew 103% year on year and described AI infrastructure and solutions as the main drivers; the source is an edited company earnings-call transcript.
- Who it affects
- For workers and organisations choosing tools, scale can bring wider availability and faster product development. It does not answer whether a specific task becomes cheaper, safer or more accurate after the cost of checking output.
- What remains unproven

Revenue and activity rose on different measures
Alphabet's 28 October earnings remarks describe a sharp acceleration in its cloud business. Chief executive Sundar Pichai said Google Cloud revenue grew 103% year on year, with AI infrastructure, AI solutions and TPU-system sales driving demand. He also said Alphabet revenue rose 25% and that Search query growth reached its fastest year-on-year rate in five years.
The AI activity measures are substantial but answer different questions. Google says its first-party model APIs process nearly 32 billion tokens a minute—more than four times the level a year earlier—and that the Gemini app has reached one billion users. Token throughput is machine activity, not a count of people or completed tasks. An app user count can include very different levels of engagement and does not reveal how many people pay or return regularly.[1]
Scale is visible; value and reliability remain harder to inspect
For cloud buyers and software teams, the disclosure suggests more organisations are paying for Google's infrastructure and models. Yet the edited remarks do not provide the underlying customer count, workload mix, price changes, geographic distribution or a comparison showing that AI caused the revenue growth. Nor do they report accuracy, security incidents or the checking time people needed after model output.
Google also said internal teams shipped 35% more code with 30% fewer errors after using its Argon model, but the remarks do not describe the denominator, error definition, comparison design or independent review. That claim should remain a company example, not evidence that other employers will obtain the same result. Confidence would improve with consistent paid-use cohorts, auditable definitions, cost per completed task and controlled customer studies measuring quality as well as speed.[1]
The distinction that matters
Three company metrics, three different meanings
Revenue, token throughput and app users cannot be added together or treated as one measure of adoption.
Revenue
Google Cloud up 103%
Paid business scale, not AI-only revenue
Activity
Nearly 32bn tokens per minute
Processing volume, not people
Reach
One billion Gemini app users
No paid or sustained-use denominator

Microsoft's cloud quarter accelerated—but the accounts still do not reveal AI revenue on its own
Microsoft reported $63.9 billion in cloud revenue and 48% Azure growth for its first fiscal quarter. The scale is material, but bundled reporting prevents readers from separating AI demand from the rest of the cloud business.

What this means for people
- For workers and organisations choosing tools, scale can bring wider availability and faster product development. It does not answer whether a specific task becomes cheaper, safer or more accurate after the cost of checking output.
Global context
Google's services operate worldwide, but the consolidated remarks do not separate adoption, prices, performance or access by region. A global user total can hide large differences in connectivity, language quality and paid availability.
